How passwords get cracked, in 3 small steps · part 2 of 3 · Character sets, length and entropy
Why is a long password better than a clever one?
Each extra character multiplies the search space, while extra symbol types only widen each dial. Entropy counts the doublings in bits. Dictionary attacks crack P@ssw0rd at once, and four random words hold out far longer.
